Today we looked at how sometimes it is easier to reverse the operation and instead of subtracting we can add to find out the difference! We realised we could solve quite tricky subtraction equations using this strategy!

Using the number line app on the I Pads
Lately we have been using an app on the I-Pads to help us to add numbers together using the number line. Here are some examples of the equations we solved.

Our Term Four learning goals
After looking at our "checkpoint" results at the end of last term we have set ourselves some goals for learning. We made videos so we could share them with you all.

This time we used our knowledge of place value for Subtraction!
We discussed words or synonyms that mean the same as subtraction, like take-away and minus.
We learnt to separate our numbers into their place value, tens and ones.
Here are Ryan and Macy's show me's - explaining their thinking as we solve our equations!

Solving problems using our knowledge of place value!
Today we created show me's to explain our thinking as we add together two digit numbers using our knowledge of place value!

Our end of term reflections :)
At the end of term we made videos to share how we felt about our learning.
We shared what we have enjoyed, what we are proud of....something that challenged us and thought about a goal for future maths learning.
Here are our videos!

Explaining the meaning of 3 digit numbers!
We have been busy creating videos that demonstrate our understanding of place value in 3 digit numbers. We videoed ourselves explaining how many hundreds, tens and ones are in our number.
Here is Macy explaining her thinking...
Now Jarhlia explains her 3 digit number
Jayden shows what he knows about his 3 digit number
267 - Two hundred and sixty seven
Katie explains her number
165 - One hundred and sixty five
Finally Lydia has a go at describing her 3 digit number
212 - Two hundred and twelve
Here is Macy explaining her thinking...
135 - One hundred and thirty five
Now Jarhlia explains her 3 digit number
133 - One hundred and thirty three
Jayden shows what he knows about his 3 digit number

Showing our thinking by subtracting by first making ten
Jarhlia - Showing how she can subtract to ten by bridging!
Here is Ryan explaining his thinking using the Make Ten subtraction strategy. Can you give him any tips to improve?

Making Tens Subtraction - using i pad app
This week we have been learning how to subtract, take away or minus numbers using our making tens first strategy. Here is our strategy card we used to help us.
We also used the "number frames" app to help us explain and show our thinking. We could see our tens frames so we could work out how many to take away. Also using equipment like tens frames helps us understand what we are doing when we take something away.
Here are photos of our achievements!!

Making Ten
The latest strategy we have been learning to help us solve problems is making ten and then adding on the rest.
Here is our strategy card we used to help us explain our thinking and to learn this strategy.

Using doubles
Over the last week we have been learning how to use our knowledge of doubles to help us solve maths problems.
Here is the Strategy Card we used to help us.
Here is Ryan explaining how he uses this strategy to solve a problem.
Here are two more examples the first from Macy and the second from Katie.
Finally Jarhlia shows her strategy!

We are learning to add by splitting two digit numbers into their place value
This week we have been learning a new strategy - adding numbers together by splitting them into their place value (tens and ones). Some of us picked this strategy up and started working on 3 digit numbers!
Here is Isabella explaining her thinking.
